Principles and Practices: Hair Technician

This course is intended for hair technician students. This course will meet preclinical requirements for licensure. Students will focus on the topics of chemistry, electricity, professional image, anatomy, infection control and Minnesota statutes and rules.

Preclinical: Cosmetology

This course will prepare cosmetology students for entry level salon work. Students will be introduced to salon reception and dispensary service work, as well as professional characteristics of salon employees. Students develop salon product knowledge, including salon ethics, sanitation, and duties. Along with salon ethics and duties, students develop salon product knowledge. Students will also learn how shampoo and condition the hair. Required preclinical testing is completed and satisfactorily completed quotas accumulate to meet quota requirements.

Introduction to Hair Design

This course introduces the practice of basic hairstyling techniques including blow drying, iron curling, flat ironing and roller placement. Hair shaping implements, cutting terminology, techniques, safety, sanitation and infection control are studied. Students develop skills in cutting elevations for various designs and shapes. Students gain experience by working on mannequins, clients, and classmates. Performance quotas must be met in compliance with Minnesota statutes and rules. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in COSM 1100.

Chemical Procedures

This course introduces basic permanent wave techniques including blocking, wrapping, and processing. Students study the effects of acid and alkaline waves and chemical compositions of solutions. Texture, elasticity, and porosity of hair are studied. Chemical hair relaxing, and curl rearrangers, are addressed as well as advanced techniques involved in permanent waving.

This practical application course includes client services. Under instructor supervision, students provide services including shampooing, conditioning, cutting, styling and chemical services to mannequins, classmates, and clients. Students develop skills in hairstyling and hair shaping. Salon safety, sanitation and infection control are stressed. Students experience salon reception and dispensary service work.

This course introduces theory of hair coloring, different types of hair color and hair lighteners. Various hair lightening, toning, and special effects techniques are studied. Emphasis is placed on the use of aniline derivative tints, temporary and semi-permanent colors. Prerequisites: COSM 1100, COSM 1105, COSM 1110.

This course prepares students to take the general theory, state and written practical exams that are required for licensure.
