Human Biology (Goal 2 & 3)

This course is an introductory study of human biology. The scientific method, biological molecules, and cell biology will be studied as a foundation to learning human histology (the study of tissues) and organ systems. Each human organ system will be investigated to develop an understanding of its contribution to the human body. Current health and social issues, and other diseases related to human biology, will also be studied.

Composition I (Goal 1 & 2) OR ENGL1102

This is an introductory college writing course designed to help students develop effective writing skills for college level work.  Students learn to generate ideas and organize them into unified, coherent essays.  Methods of instruction vary, but most sections combine individual conferences and peer review with regular class meetings.  Prerequisites:  A grade of C or higher in ENGL 0960 or appropriate placement score.

This course explores human growth and development from the prenatal through adult life stages, including aging and death.  Students will examine the interaction between genetics and environment on the individual’s physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development. Foundations of Practical Nursing

Foundations of Practical Nursing introduces the student to the profession of nursing at the practical nursing level and to the nursing process/ NCSBN Clinical Judgement Measurement Model. These concepts provide the student with a beginning framework for evidence based clinical decision making. The key concepts of teamwork and collaboration, safety, quality improvement, professional identity /behavior, patient/relationship centered care, nursing judgment/evidence-based practice, managing care of the individual patient, and informatics/technology are introduced. Nursing Care of Adults I introduces medical/surgical nursing principles, health promotion, safety and end of life care. Emphasis is on common health problems of adults with a special emphasis on the changes of the adult as they age. Concepts of pathophysiology, nutrition and pharmacology are applied to common diseases within each topic area. Pre-requisite: Admission to the Practical Nursing Program. Pharmacology

This course introduces and demonstrates scope of practice, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, medication terminology, drug classifications, adverse side effects, contraindications to drug use, dosage calculations, lab values, legal responsibilities and safety issues related to non- parenteral/parenteral and topical medication administration. Emphasis is placed on drug classification and nursing care related to the safe administration of medications to patients across the life span. Psychosocial nursing care centers on the care of patients with psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Clinical IIA provides the student an opportunity to apply nursing judgment using evidence-based care, critical thinking and clinical judgment to implement safe, patient/relationship centered care to individual patients across the lifespan. The clinical student reflects on the value of patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, informatics, quality improvement, safety, managing care of the individual patient, and nursing judgment/evidence-based care in his/her career as an LPN. This portion of clinical is presented in the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU).

Transition to Practice

This course facilitates the transition of the student to the LPN role and to the workplace. Standards of practice and the importance of practicing according to state regulations and statutes for the scope of practice for the LPN are examined. Students complete a portfolio that shows their successful mastery of the program outcomes at the level of a new graduate. Pre-requisites: PNUR 1110, 1120, 1130, 1140. Upon completion of the Practical Nursing program, a student has the following options:

  • The nursing student may sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Practical Nursing and choose to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse after success on the NCLEX-PN exam.
  • The nursing student may sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Practical Nursing and apply at a later date for acceptance into the Nursing (RN Track) program with Advanced Standing after success on the NCLEX-PN exam.
