Course Placement Testing

Course placement determines a student’s readiness for college level courses.  Students need to be evaluated for course placement prior to registering for classes.

Riverland uses multiple measures to determine your course placement, including high school GPA, assessment scores, and previous coursework completed.

Please make sure you have submitted the following items to Riverland prior to your Advising & Registration appointment with your assigned advisor or you may not be able to register until they are received:

  1. Official Assessment Scores for Accuplacer, ACT, SAT, MCA, GED, CASAS, TABE 11/12
  2. Official High School transcript
  3. Official College transcripts

Don't have any of the documents above or would you like to raise your course placement level? You will need to register to take the Accuplacer test.

Ability to Benefit (ATB) testers - do not register for a test date online. Please contact the Assessment Coordinator at assessments@riverland.edu to schedule a time to take the Ability to Benefit test.

What does your test score mean?

Your scores determine your English and Math course placements

Prepare for the Accuplacer Test

There are a variety of free or inexpensive resources to prepare for the Course Placement test. We highly recommend students to test when they are well-rested, and only after a thorough review of the ACCUPLACER study guides.

Can accommodations be made for students with a disability?

Riverland offers accommodations for Accuplacer for students with a documented disability. The Accuplacer assessment is not timed and all sessions offered on campus are physically accessible. If you require other accommodations for Accuplacer, please contact Accessibility Services to document your disability, request accommodations and schedule the Accuplacer.

What if English is not your primary language?

If English is not your first language, you may be given an ESL assessment. The Accuplacer ESL test assesses the English skills of students who have learned English as an additional language to their native or first language.

Do you need an Accuplacer Voucher?

Students who take the Accuplacer test at an institution different than the one they plan to attend will need an Accuplacer Voucher.
