Course Placement Testing (Accuplacer)

What is Course Placement Testing?

Before you can register for classes at Riverland, you’ll need to complete course placement testing. This process helps determine whether you're ready for college-level coursework in areas like reading, writing, and math.

At Riverland, we use Accuplacer — a nationally recognized placement test — as our primary assessment tool. That’s why you’ll often hear  "Accuplacer" used instead of "course placement test." Same test, different name.

How Course Placement is Determined

Riverland uses multiple measures for course placement:

  • High School GPA
  • Assessment Scores (e.g., Accuplacer, ACT, SAT, MCA, GED, CASAS, TABE 11/12)
  • Previous Coursework Completed

Required Items Before Advising & Registration

To register for classes, please make sure you’ve submitted the following required items to Riverland before your Advising & Registration appointment:

  1. Official Assessment Scores (Accuplacer, ACT, SAT, MCA, GED, CASAS, TABE 11/12)
  2. Official High School Transcript
  3. Official College Transcripts (if applicable)

Note: If you do not submit these items, you may not be able to register for classes.

Need to Take the Accuplacer?

If you do not have the required documents or want to improve your course placement level, you need to register to take the Accuplacer test.
