CDL Eligibility and Training Requirements at Riverland
What You Need to Start CDL Training
Before you can begin CDL training at Riverland, make sure you meet the following requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old (21 if you plan to drive across state lines or transport passengers or hazardous materials)
- You must hold a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license
- Your license must be active with no suspensions or revocations
- You must meet federal medical requirements and have a valid DOT Health Card
- You must be able to read and speak English
- You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States
Step 1: Get Your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)
You’ll need a CLP before starting behind-the-wheel training. This requires passing written knowledge tests and bringing the correct documents to a Minnesota DVS exam station.

Step 2: Complete a DOT Physical
Schedule a DOT physical exam with a certified examiner. Your health card must be valid before you begin training.

Step 3: Register in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
All CDL students must register in the Federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. If you are not employed, register yourself as a driver.
