Watching the video of Mr. George Floyd’s interaction with the police in Minneapolis evoked a complex mixture of emotions in people. Our reactions and emotions vary depending on our age, background, society imposed racial category, religious beliefs, political ideology, upbringing, social economic status, and residential zip code to name a few. Humans have the genetic code to distinguish between justice and injustice, fairness and unfairness but we are conditioned by the environment in which we nurture the code.
The 32nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration was held at Riverland Community College on Monday evening, honoring the contributions King made to economic justice, according to a press release. It was an evening of music and thoughtful reflection.

MN Reconnect offers personalized support across
four Minnesota State college campuses including Riverland
The Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE) and Minnesota State are launching a new program to help adult learners re-enroll and finish their postsecondary education: MN Reconnect.
The Riverland Community College Foundation recently held their Evening of Excellence Scholarship Ceremony bringing together more than 450 students, donors, family, friends, and Riverland employees to celebrate students receiving scholarships during the 2016-17 academic year. To date this year, the Riverland Community College Foundation has awarded 500 scholarships valued at more than $470,000 to Riverland students. These funds are sponsored by the local individuals, organizations, and businesses.
A snowplow donation from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to Riverland Community College’s truck driving program is expected to aid students and the state’s transportation agency.
Dan Hoffman has been selected as Interim Director of the Center for Agricultural and Food Science Technology at Riverland Community College. Dan brings nearly 40 years of experience in agriculture, education, business and leadership to the position.

Riverland Community College has named Kelly McCalla as interim vice president of academic and student affairs. The one year appointment began Aug. 24. McCalla has been serving as Riverland’s dean of the arts, humanities and social sciences division since July 2, 2014.
