Release Date: May 4, 2015

Blue-Devils

Riverland Community College is less than a month away from the Hall of Fame weekend to be held in Austin and Albert Lea May 29 through June 1, but continues the search for several alumni inductees or their families to accept their awards. (See Rosters below).

For the first time, and in celebration of Riverland’s 75th Anniversary, the college will induct eight teams into the Riverland Community College Athletic Hall of Fame during a dinner and ceremony to be held at Wedgewood Cove Friday, May 29 starting at 6 p.m. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. In the past, only individual players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The teams to be inducted include the 1947-48 football team, the 1951-52 men’s basketball team, the 1965-66 men’s golf team, the 1971-72 men’s baseball team, the 1976-77 women’s basketball team, the 1979-80 women’s softball team, the 1986-87 women’s tennis team and the 1990-91 men’s tennis team. (See Rosters below).

These teams date back through the 75 year history of Riverland Community College and locating many of the players (or their families) has been a challenge. Anyone with knowledge of one of the players (or living family) listed the roster is encouraged to notify David Lillemon, Riverland’s athletic director, by phone, 507-433-0543 or email, david.lillemon@riverland.edu.

Besides, the historic induction ceremony, the college has an entire weekend of activities planned that includes a Breakfast of Champions celebration at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium at the Austin campus on May 30. This includes photographs and tours. At 12:30 p.m. Saturday, there will be an 18-hole Golf Fundraiser at Wedgewood Cove in Albert Lea.

Participants can also participate in the 75th Anniversary Jubilee Jam, a free public event scheduled for Sunday, May 31 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Austin Campus’ ball diamond complex. This free celebration promises fun for the whole family. Featuring SIX MILE GROVE and three other bands playing on the Austin Showmobile stage. Other acts include The D’Seivers, Josh and Kären Larson and Whalen and the Willows, all with Alumni connections to Riverland.

With food and beverages from three different food trucks, a beer garden, a bouncy house and games for the kids, this event provides the perfect way to continue the Hall of Fame weekend, celebrate Riverland and spend a day outdoors with family and friends.

Finally, on Monday, June 1, Riverland Athletics will host their 28th annual Golf Fundraiser at Austin Country Club starting at 12:30 p.m. The cost to play in the tournament is $125. The event includes an 18-hole tournament in a four-person scramble format, dinner with a program and a silent auction. There is a special price of $175 for participants who want to play in both Riverland tournaments at Wedgewood (Sat.) and Austin Country Club (Mon.).
