Melissa Borman's photographs present us with a unique sense of place, showing us familiar things in an unexpected way. The view she offers of her chosen scenes is both grounded and ungrounded- intimately embedded in earth or sea, yet mysterious and non-specific. It is the view from below and up close, vision just at water's level, or the perspective of a child lying on the grass or an insect making its way. Borman's vision invests her subjects with a sense of wonder and strangeness, and allows us to explore our world with fresh eyes.
Borman explains, "I am drawn to landscapes imbued with symbolic power, from which I make work that conveys my own intimate and immersive experiences. Growing up in a military family, my peripatetic childhood required me to call many placeshome. This experience has compelled me to make work about “place” that is outside the context of specific physical boundaries or geographic identity".
Melissa Borman has exhibited her work extensively around the country. She is currently a faculty member at Century College. The show will conclude with a closing reception and artist's talk on October 25 at 1:30.
