Riverland Community College

This course prepares the student to safely use power and hand tools in the construction trades. The study of construction materials and fastening procedures are covered. A series of required hand and power tool projects are completed in the carpentry lab. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). (3 Cr - 1 lect, 2 lab)

This course introduces basic blueprint reading, and estimating for residential construction.   Students study and read a series of residential construction working drawings.  The student identifies different prints used in building a residential home.  Estimating a project, such as a garage, is also completed. This course is part of the Carpentry program, and which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

This course introduces basic principles of residential framing.  The student studies types of residential framing: floor and walls.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisites:  CARP 1110.

(4 Credits – 1 lecture, 3 lab)

This course addresses how to properly install exterior wall components and roof framing.  The student installs sheathing, siding, and completes a gable roof structure.  Different types of materials and procedures for each process are covered.  This course also introduces the erection of trusses and hand-framing of rafters.  Correct methods of shingling, flashing, and proper ventilation are included.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisites: CARP 1110.

This course covers basic mathematics and elements of algebra that will prepare students for success in their specific technical areas. Students will develop their problem-solving skills and master mathematical concepts. Students will receive a grade for this course. Prerequisite: Appropriate placement in course based on Multiple Measures for Course Placement – Math Decision Band Chart. (2 Cr – 2 lect, 0 lab)

This course introduces basic information concerning blueprint reading, estimating, and computer-aided design and drafting (C.A.D.D.) for residential construction.  Students study and read a series of residential construction working drawings.  The student identifies different blueprints used in building a residential home.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Prerequisite: CARP 1110 and CARP 1121.

This course introduces the installation of all exterior doors and windows.  Application of residential siding and soffit procedures are performed.  This course places emphasis on window identification, placement, and installation techniques.  Installation of various hardware and door hanging procedures are performed.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisite: CARP 1110.

This course emphasizes the basic concepts of interior finish in residential construction.  The focus is on hanging, taping, and finishing of interior drywall, hanging and trimming interior doors and locksets. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisites:  CARP 1110.

This course introduces the installation of interior doors, window trim, and stair railing.  Staining, varnishing or painting of millwork are possibly included.  The installation of finished wood floors or tile floors is introduced depending on class project.  The course also introduces the installation of kitchen cabinets, vanities, and other built-ins.  This course is part of the Carpentry program, which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisites:  CARP 1110 and CARP 1235.

This course will introduce the student to residential construction estimating concepts and building codes.  Students will be introduced to materials and methods used in residential construction projects.  Application of linear, square, and cubic measurements and their relationship to the estimating process will be studied.  Estimating software will be introduced.  The application of the various Minnesota Codes and the International Residential Code used in residential construction will also be studied.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisites:  CARP 1110.  (2 Credits – 1 lecture, 1 lab)

This course emphasizes the basic concepts of deck construction methods. The focus is on application and techniques necessary to select materials and construct decks, railing, and stairs. Students design, plan, and construct a deck that meets the minimum requirements of the International Residential Code. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Prerequisites: CARP 1110.(2 Credits – 1 lecture, 1 lab)

This course examines interpersonal relationship skills in the work environment. Students evaluate individual strengths and weaknesses and assess and learn transferable skills. This course emphasizes employment-enhancing skills that include understanding and improving relationships and communication with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates, and customers. This survey course introduces concepts and methods for improvement of interpersonal relations. (2 Cr – 2 lect, 0 lab)

This course emphasizes various methods of wall framing. Different types of materials and methods used in framing are examined. Students participate in various methods of framing process. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). (3Cr - 1 lecture, 2 lab)

In this course the students will work on concrete footing, foundations and flatwork. Student will demonstrate forming and finishing skills.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

This course examines the layout of a building project on a building site. Students work with setting elevations in preparation for excavation. Students will establish proper setbacks and locate building corners. Students will complete required site work plan and drainage plans as required by local government. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). (2 Cr - 1 lecture, 1 lab)

This Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Construction safety course trains workers and employers on recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace. This course includes information on workers' rights, employer responsibilities and how to file a complaint. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

In this course students will learn proper ways to use equipment and how to determine if equipment needs to be removed from service. Students will perform regular maintenance on equipment. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Students in this course will learn about interior wall finishes, drop ceiling installation and layout. Students will correctly identify the type of finish from blueprints, detail drawings and specification book information. This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisite:  CARP 1235

This course will introduce students to the construction and erection of a steel frame building. Students will examine the various parts and assembly procedure used in steel frame erection. Students will identify possible hazards or OSHA violations.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

In this course students will locate casework on blueprint and identify the correct hardware and cabinets. Students will install casework, hang doors with correct hardware, and complete other steps to close out a commercial project. This course will introduce students to various methods of estimating. Students will look at scheduling work with subcontractors on job sites in meeting the project schedule. The students will review codes and how they apply to different construction sites. The students will look up codes and explain their relevance to the job.  This course is part of the Carpentry program which is accredited by the Home Builders Institute (HBI) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).  Prerequisite:  CARP 1250

Students in this course will further advance their commercial blue print reading skills. The students will study commercial plans and working drawings. (3 Cr – 1-lect, 2- lab)

In this course students will work on a construction site to gain real construction experience. Students will be introduced to the responsibility of a construction site with all the hazards and how to safely work with them. Students will learn how to work as a team. They will complete a minimum of three weeks full time on the job training.
