English as a Second Language (ESLA)

Students who register for Intermediate courses must pass with a B or above to register for the advanced course of the same skill. For example, a student enrolled in ESLA 0930 Intermediate Writing and Grammar must pass with a B in order to register for ESLA 0950 Advanced and Grammar. After completing the Advanced ESLA classes, students are eligible to enroll in ENGL 0960 and most college-level classes. Select classes in Psychology, Art and Music can also be taken along with ESLA courses.

Intermediate Writing and Grammar

This writing and grammar course is designed for non-native speakers of English. Learners will analyze model texts and develop the writing, grammar, and critical thinking skills needed to be successful in college courses. Passing will require an 70% mastery or letter grade C- of learning outcomes. Prerequisites: One of the following must be satisfied to enroll in this course: ESL Accuplacer Reading score of 73 or higher plus an acceptable score on the ESLA faculty-assessed writing sample; TOEFL iBT score of 32 or higher; TOEFL Paper score of 400 or higher; IELTS Academic Module score of Band 3.5 or higher; IELTS General Training Module score of Band 4.5 or higher. This course does not meet distribution requirements and will not count as credits toward graduation. A grade of 70% or letter grade C- or higher is required to enroll in ESLA 0950.

Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary *

This reading and vocabulary course is designed for non-native speakers of English. The course focuses on developing strategies necessary for understanding fiction and non-fiction text types. The learner will practice applying strategies to increase reading comprehension skills, reading speed, and vocabulary range. The learner will actively study vocabulary which is most frequently encountered in college texts and lectures from the Academic Word List (AWL). Passing will require a 70% mastery or letter grade C- of learning outcomes.  Prerequisites:  One of the following must be satisfied to enroll in this course:  Completion of ESLA 0920 with a grade of C- (80%) or higher; ESL Accuplacer Reading score of 73 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 32 or higher; TOEFL Paper score of 400 or higher; IELTS Academic Module score of Band 3.5 or higher; IELTS General Training Module score of Band 4.5 or higher. A grade of 70% or letter grade C- or higher is required to enroll in ESLA 1040.

This listening and speaking course is designed for non-native speakers of English.  The course provides the strategies and skill practice necessary for learners to successfully participate in future academic courses. Learners will develop their listening and note-taking skills through activities based on audiotaped and videotaped lectures, live class presentations and discussions. Learners will develop their speaking skills by participating in class discussions and giving short presentations. Passing will require a 70% mastery or letter grade C- of learning outcomes. Prerequisites:  One of the following must be satisfied to enroll in this course:  Completion of ESLA 0920 with a grade of C- (70%) or higher; ESL Accuplacer Reading score of 73 or higher; TOEFL iBT score of 32 or higher; TOEFL Paper score of 400 or higher; IELTS Academic Module score of Band 3.5 or higher; IELTS General Training Module score of Band 4.5 or higher.
