Practicum Education in Radiography
- Hands-On Experience: Practicums allow students to apply theoretical knowledge of radiography, patient care, procedures, and radiation protection in real-world settings.
- Location: Practicum sites are located throughout southern Minnesota, requiring students to travel. (see sites below)
- Transportation Requirements:
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Students must arrange their own transportation.
- Schedule:
- 1st Year Students: 3 days on campus with an additional 16 hours per week of practicum.
- 2nd Year Students: 2 days on campus with an additional 24 hours per week of practicum.
- Students will be on campus or in clinical 5 days per week during the fall and spring semesters of the program.
- Site Assignments:
- Practicum placements are made solely by the Program’s Practicum Placement Committee (PPC). No student or practicum site may self-select, trade, or decline an assigned placement without prior written approval from the Program Director and Clinical Coordinator.
The sites are decided using the following criteria:
- Equitability – Students rotate through a balanced mix of hospital sizes and patient populations.
- Consistency – Each cohort follows the same rotation matrix.
- Timeliness – Schedules are released at least 6 weeks before the start of each semester.
- Educational Validity – Assignments are sequenced to match didactic content and ensure progressive skill development.
- Note: Commuting is required for all practicum assignments.
